Flatplans for Front covers, contents pages and DPS

Front Covers

These are my flatplans of my possible magazine covers. They all involve main images, titles in the same location and coverlines. In the first one 'Volume' the title takes up the majority of the page, but has images of music notes across the page. This cover isnt the most inspiring cover as there isnt any images to attract the reader. The 2nd one 'Tune Up' is a bit more reader friendly with an image of a well known pop artist in the centre of the page with the title above him and surrounded by coverlines. This would attract more readers as it has a image of a well known artist. The 3rd cover 'Shuffle' is more of an iconic front cover as it has images of a band in action. This could make the reader think that they have recently performed and would want to read the reviews about it. With the artist in action, the audience will be more interested in reading the magazine.

Contents Pages

These are my flatplans of contents pages. They both are again similarly styled but are different in layout. In the 1st one 'Shuffle' the articles are presented in chronological order and with one in the middle being the lead article. Also the masthead is located above the articles but below the title. In the 2nd flatplan the articles are in non-chronological order with the main articles or most interesting articles in the magazine spread over 1 page. There is also a text box with the other articles in from the magazine in chronological order and decending down the box.

Double Page Spread

This is my flatplan of my double page spread. The subheading is in a banner over the two pages and also the main image crosses over the two pages. The remaining of the pages are covered in text about the relative article. Also a little masthead is situated in the top corners of each page.

5 Line paragraph

'Shuffle' isabout all the latest tunes and gossip from all around the music world of pop. It will appeal to the target audience by including images which will appeal to the audience and relating articles to interest the reader. The USP will be the offers in the magazine to do with music related events etc. The house style will be that there will be a logo on every page symbolising the magazines name and brand. Also to enhance the knowledge of the magazine.

Photoshop ideas for Music magazine

These are my early photoshop ideas for my music magazine. The front cover would have the image of the main people in the magazine surrounded by coverlines. The masthead will be across the top of the page and will also feature across the top. On the contents page the articles will be on non-chronological order with again the main article being in the centre of the page, larger than the others. There would also be a text box with other articles in the right order but missing out the featured articles on the main piece of the page. The double page will be soley on an interview and information situated around it including the answers to questions etc. It will be fairly text based but will have the main image spreading between both pages.

Mind Map Ideas for my Magazine

This is the mindmap of my ideas for the presentation of my music magazine. It has all the ideas I made on how my magazine will look when completed. It includes the masthead being on every page, and other ideas for the contents page and DPS. The ideas are mostly the ones you'd see on magazines like 'NME' but all together, the magazine should look stylish.

Flatplan of masthead ideas

These are my 3 Masthead flatplan ideas. The each a very different in style and presentation. They all are named after musical terms. The first one 'Shuffle' will be multi-coloured and is a very appropriate style similarly with its name. The letters are shuffled around in heights, but its still clear what its says.

The 2nd one called 'Tune Up' is also named with music in mind. The presentation is also ironic towards the name as it is presented at different levels of height to imply that its ascending. If this idea was chosen the colour scheme would be gradually become darker to also imply the ascending design.

The last one 'Volume' also has music based naming. The presentation of the text is in the form of a volume bar which is also similar to music terms and equipment. Also the text is in decending order to also imply that the idea is to do with volume.

Flatplan of Front cover of college magazine

This is my flatplan idea for my college magazine. It features the masthead in the centre at the top of the page. The text will be the same colour as the models clothing, on a faded background colour. The image is a medium close up of the model posing. There will be coverlines around the model showing the other articles in the magazine.

Mood Board for My Magazine

This is the mood board I have created for my music magazine project. It contains different things from magazines which that have interested me and which I could use the similar styles for my magazine when I come to design it. The main thing which interested me was the image with the text incorparated onto it. The image of intrest is the one of the woman with boxing gloves with the article wrote onto it. I think this is a good idea on a contents page of front cover because with the text incorparated into the image then it takes up less space on the page. Also some of the images have interested me. Mostly the angles in which they are taken at because they capture the performance of the artists. I also found some text layout styles which I will use in my magazine. The text declines down the page;usually used on front covers for cover lines is a good way to present info because it takes up less space on a page.

Masthead Research

The 'kerrang' masthead shows that the magazines genre is metal. The font is shown as to be a cracked pane of glass which shows the music is rugged and heavy metal.

The NME is an indie style magazine. There arent many clues in the masthead of the genre of the magazine. But the bright contrast could indicate the genre of the music articles in the magazine.

Magazine Research

NME Magazine
On the cover of the music magazine ‘NME’, the brands colours are clearly shown. The masthead, title are all in red writing in the same font clearly shown for the audience to study. There are also cover lines on the page which are presented under the main article. The headline would also be described as a banner as it covers the whole of the middle tier of the page and extends onto another line beneath. There is also a cover price on the page situated underneath the masthead.

The contents page contains all the articles which are in the magazine. The contents page is headed with a title saying ‘Inside this week’ and the date which the magazine was released is below the title. The articles are situated randomly around the page. They are in different fonts which could show they are all different fields of the industry.  Also the remaining features of the magazine are listed in descending order in a little column underneath the biggest photo and subhead.

The double page spread in the ‘NME’ magazine filled with artists that are performing at the ‘CMJ 2011 Awards’. The artists are spaced chronologically across the spread with images of them in action and a description of their personality and music. Some of the information around the images are in the same colour as the borders on the page which indicates that that is the colour the ‘CMJ Awards’ are recognized by. There is also information underneath the subheads about the day and time they are on.

Q Magazine

The cover of the ‘Q’ magazine is predominantly covered by a advertisement of the free CD given away with the magazine. The spot colour for the advertising is orange with yellow highlights and the text is a similar colour but on a white background on the page. If you peel back the advertisement sheet you see the actual front cover which has a full page of the 4 members of ‘U2’ one of the most successful bands of all time. In the background is the masthead of the ‘Q’ magazine and also the advertisement of the ‘Q Awards’. They are self-advertising their awards in the form of a border round the page. There are also subheads on the cover which are about the bands which performed at the ‘Q Awards’ which is presented in a box which descends in front of the image.

The contents page is spread over a double page and shows all the articles in the magazine in a random order. At the top of the 1st page there is the Masthead along with ‘Contents’ and a slogan to entice the readers. They have images of the artist/article in question with the same colour used for the background on the advertising cover.

The double page spread is from page 22-23 and is named ‘Captured’, which contains snap shots of music icons either making a fool of themselves, or pictures annotated to make the stars look silly. The pictures are mostly close ups of well-known musicians in random order across the pages. They are annotated with captions about the picture and trying to make it sound funny.

Mojo Magazine

The cover of the music magazine ‘Mojo’ is filled with information. It contains a image of the band ‘The Who’ in their heyday also with subheads and main cover lines above the image on the page. The masthead is situated behind the image in a stocky font in black ink which captures the style of this magazine which is a mod style. The magazine has its cover lines in descending columns above the image. There are also subheadings above the masthead with images of who the article is about.

The contents page is quite bland compared to the others. There is a black and white image of an artist on the corresponding side of the page to the features. The features are in a quite dull font and in black ink on white background. It has the masthead at the top of the page and locations situated with the publishing of the magazine. It also has the issue number and month issue beneath the masthead.

The double page spread is on page 10-11. It is also on a dark dull background with images of ‘mods’ sketched in. The page contains the list of all songs on the free CD given away with the magazine. The page has the images of the artists with a short brief about them and their music. The artists are ranked chronologically from 1-15 which is how many songs are on the CD. There is also a little advertisement beneath the artist saying which album they have done where you can find the song which was chosen to be put on the mixed artist CD.

How are women represented in 50 Cent - Candy Shop Music Video

In 50 Cent - Candy Shop music video, women are represented in many ways which men like '50 Cent' think they are like. They are represented in the video as glamourus but dressed to impress in slutty clothing. The women also dance around the protagonist to try and impress him. They are all in competition around him to represent they are desperate. He arrives into the video driving a flashy car and enters the building with plenty of women striving to seduce him. He treats the majority of the women in the video like they have to be with him rather than them wanting to be with him. In most rap music videos featuring women, they play a major role in the video via singing and acting along with the lyrics, but in the 50 Cent video they are all concentrating on him and seducing him rather than being a feature in the video. The woman with 50 Cent throughout the video is frequently shown more than the others to show that she is the protagonist that it 50 Cents' partner, but as the video continues he has more than one on the go. The mise-en-scene in the video shows the women in the shots wearing skimpy clothing to try and seduce 50 Cent and it ends up looking like their having a competition to try and win him. Women are presented badly in the video in my opionion as they are filmed doing degrading stunts which maybe the view of 50 Cent of how women are in society.

Motley Crew Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2XdmyBtCRQ&ob=av2n

This music video by the 'Motlet Crew' represents the band members as hard, ruthless men from the 'Mod' reign. They come across to the audience as crazy bike riders who are tough. They show this by acting anti-socially in their surroundings e.g. pushing people off the table and showing knives about. Also riding around on their Harley Davidssons with no helmets or protection on. Also they see themselves as players/studs around ladies, looking around at how the girls look in the night club.

Reader Profile

Magazine Cover

This is my magazine cover for the project. I chose the background to show similarities with the models clothing to give the magazine a colour theme. I also took the colour from the models shirt and used that colour as my font colour. I chose this also to show similarities across my magazine. I will use the same colour and font throughout the project. Another reason why I chose a grey background is because lots of different colours show up well on it so I have no limit on other colours to use for advertising etc in the magazine.

Magazine Research

I have chosen this magazine cover as one to write about because the front cover is attractive and would entice people to read it. The title is a rhetorical question which is used to give the audience a reason to read on and in this case to read about the main article in the magazine. Also the colour choice is very similar to what people know about the planet mars which is the main story in the newspaper which is a nice similarity to use on the front cover.

I chose this picture also because it has an interesting image on the front cover. The picture will attract audience of all ages because its a picture lots of generations would be interested in looking at.

Contents Page

This is my contents page for my magazine. I chose to use the same background colour as my magazine cover to continue the colour trend at the beginning of the magazine. I also used the same font and colour which I used on the cover.I used a picture of the same model in the contents page and also pictures of some of the articles which are in the magazine to advertise them with a bit more of a impact.

CD Cover Work

This is my CD cover. I have used a space design background because the CD name is 'Party Time In Space' so I decided to make the background matches with the name and make all features about the same thing. The cover has all 4 members of the band, floating in space to go along with the space theme of the album cover. I faded out the band members faces to look more like they are floating.

My CD back cover is also designed to look like space. I have placed some of the songs which feature on the album on planets and other space starforms to make it look more like a space theme.
The spine of my CD cover has all the necessary information. It has the bandname, album title and a logo of a star at the bottom, to keep in touch with the space theme of the album.
This is my moodboard of my space themed CD cover. It has ideas of what I wanted to put on my mood board. I chose the dance image because of the band style.
